Effie Mae Stroud

October 30, 1948 – May 27, 2025

Mother Effie Mae Stroud was born to the late Mother Catherine Rome Dorsey. Effie was such a nurturing and loving person with a heart of gold, always loving everyone she met.  Effie never met a stranger because she often said that we are all related in some way or another through Christ.  Mother was educated in the Rockdale County School System, where she graduated from JP Carr school in 1968. It was at J P Carr High School that she met the love of her life, the late Avorn Stroud. From their 36-year marriage, three beautiful daughters were born. The late Pamela Rome James, Buffie Hammond and Lawonda Stroud.

Throughout Effie’s life she was blessed to work in the same field and place as her mother Catherine Dorsey and her brother Alvin Rome. Having worked at Pine Street Elementary School for 26 years and later GRN Mental Health for 6 years, she was able to retire after 32years of service with the state due to health issues. Effie was raised in the church and never failed to let others know that the Bald Rock Baptist Church and Family were a big cornerstone in her life. Effie joined the church at a very early age and started working with her mother and Dorothy Rome (her late aunt) on the Mothers’ Board. She served on the Mothers’ Board, Ushers Board, Sunday School, Mission, Hospitality Committee, Senior and Gospel Chorus, and the Robert Rome Family Choir. She donated to various outreach ministries such as WCJ Outreach and so many others. She was often asked, “Mother, when are you going to stop singing?” She always answered, “When the Lord calls me home.” And on May 27″ she got her call to sing in the Heavenly choir. Throughout Effie’s life, there were many ups and downs and health issues, but through it all her faith was never shaken, and she never failed to let those who came to visit and pray with her know that it was God who was sustaining her and covering her. She often told her doctors, “I hear what you say; now be quiet and let me hear from the Father.” Effie was truly loved by so many people who were by her side on this journey God placed her on. People called her, visited her and most of all loved her. In her words, “I thank you all for helping me finish my race; now go work on yours and be blessed doing it.” She often traveled up and down the road in her earlier years singing with her mother The late Catherine Dorsey and her late uncle, Dea. Robert Rome. When God saw Effie getting tired and weary, she started singing this song, “I’m on my way Home,” and on May 27 she answered the call.

Effie was preceded in death by her husband, the late Avorn Stroud; her daughter, Pamela James; her mother, Catherine Dorsey; her brother, Alvin Rome; and 2 grandchildren, Christopher and Daniella. She leaves to cherish her memory 2 daughters Buffie (Moses) Hammond and Lawonda Stroud; three grandchildren, Demarcus, Jatonio and Cameron; two sons-in-law, Dexter James and Moses Hammond; two sisters, Carolyn Rome and Audrey Thomas; one brother -n-law, Horace Stroud; two sisters -n-law, Beverly (late Alvin) Rome and Francis Stroud; two god daughters, Lisa Rouhlac and Roxanne Foster; and a host of cousins, nephews, nieces and friends.
